After bloodshed, Venezuelan government and foes battle for votes

9 October 2017

The brother of former Venezuela's president and a follower of Venezuela's best-known detained opposition leader compete for votes. The opposition leaders keep pressure on President Maduro to overturn his current majority of 20 states to three. The race for the governorship of Barinas is one of the most typical of 23 state elections on Sunday.

It took place just weeks after opposition-led protests that shook Venezuela and brought at least 125 deaths. The opposition now wants to end 18 years of nearly unbroken control of the governorship by Chavez family members.
