Border jam puts Mongolia's coal lifeline under threat

14 November 2017

Mongolia's coal exports to China rose more than four-fold in the first half of the year. But the growth has seen a slowdown since the delays at the border crossings first arose in July. The coal trading journey can take the thousands of heavy-duty trucks more than a week to reach China. Mongolia said customs on both sides of the border were short-staffed. It also added that the situation had been exacerbated by events like the Chinese Communist Party Congress last month.
