London marked a ceremony Monday to commemorate Chinese fishermen, who saved hundreds of British soldiers 75 years ago. The Japanese military freighter Lisbon Maru carrying 1,816 British prisoners of war was hit by US torpedoes in 1942 and sank near the Chinese port of Zhoushan.
BRIAN FINCH, RETIRED MAJOR FROM MIDDLESEX REGIMENT said "I am very keen to make sure that the fishermen who very bravely rescue so many prisoners of war, who would otherwise have died at the hands of Japanese. We recognize and remember their courage. And also that we remember 828 prisoners who did not survive and who are still lying at the bottom of the sea in Zhoushan."
