World Metrology Day: Metrology Is The Science Of Measurement

World Metrology Day was held for the first time on Friday.

As the metrology is the science of measurement, it aims to raise the awareness on how measurement is important and related to the daily lives among different stakeholders in that area. World Metrology Day falls on May 20th. This year theme is measurements for transport.

It was organized by Department of Research and Innovation (DRI) of the Ministry of Science and Technology with the support of PTB, the national metrology institute of Germany.

Director & Head, National Standards & Quality Department (DRI), Dr. Zar Ni Aung: I’d like to say measurements are important in our daily lives. It concerns with trade and leads correct process between sellers and buyers. Our department is now going to the situation which can guarantee the measurements in line with international standard. There are certificate laboratories in the country. So we will discuss with them how those certificates will be accepted internationally in today’s event.

Currently DRI is drafting the Metrology Law with the help of PTB and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Project Coordinator, Technical Cooperation Working Group Q.52 (PTB), Svenja Weyrauch: “Actually assist to draft of Metrology law, even before the actual project has started in 2015. So even before this phase we have assisted to the draft and I think it's very important law for Myanmar because it says the legal frame for functioning quality infrastructure in Myanmar.”

Meanwhile National Institute of Metrology, Myanmar which will store standard measurement of the country is now being built and will be completed by 2018.
