ASEAN / U.S.: Union Minister Joins Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

The Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Wunna Maung Lwin participated in the ASEAN-U.S. Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on the sidelines of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 23 via videoconference.

The Meeting attended by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers, Secretary-General of ASEAN and representatives from the ASEAN and the United States was co-chaired by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia and the Secretary of State of the United States.

The Meeting discussed matters relating to tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, ASEAN-U.S. cooperation and regional security issues. Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Wunna Maung Lwin underlined the importance of strengthening multilateralism in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Union Minister appreciated the United States’ support to ASEAN’s effort in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, and encouraged the United States’ further support to ASEAN’s COVID-19 response initiatives as well as its continued support to ASEAN’s efforts on regional integration, especially through the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI). With regard to development in Myanmar, the Union Minister explained the security condition in the country, implementation of the five-point roadmap of the State Administration Council and five-point consensus of the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting including efforts for the provision of humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar.
The Union Minister urged the United States and the ASEAN Member states to condemn terrorist acts committed by the NUG and CRPH. Their representation at the UN and other international fora is not legitimate and unacceptable.
