The grand opening ceremony of the centennial celebration of University of Yangon was held at the convocation hall of University’s compound on the 2nd of December.
State CounsellorDawAung San SuuKyi, Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker Mann Win Khaing Than, Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt. Gen Kyaw Swe, Union Minister for Education Dr. Myo Thein Gyi, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein and many other officials graced the ceremony. Established in 1920, the University of Yangon has an illustrious tumultuous history and recognized as a premier institution of higher learning in Southeast Asia.
Yangon University Alumnus, Chit Oo Nyo said “I’m so grateful to all the teachers and students who participated in the movements to Colonial Education Act in 1920 and 1936. When we look back to outstanding individuals like Sayar Zaw Gyi, Sayar Min Thu Wun, General Aung San, U Thant and U Nu, we can see the pride of the University. As I am an Alumnus of the University, I would like to urge the new generation to strive forward for better future.”
University of Yangon is the focus of aspirations of many young people in Myanmar for a dignified future, successful career and opportunities for personal growth. The University of Yangon is now ready to claim once again a prominent role in nurturing new generations of creative, qualified and responsible citizens and professionals: to deliver relevant education and research that serve the needs of national renewal and become a model of effective governance and planning in higher education.
Final Year Student, Myanmar Major (University of Yangon), Sett Kyar Naing said “I am so excited to be part of this celebration. As my parents are the alumni of University of Yangon, I’ve heard their memories since I was young. I even found out the images of my parents at RC-2 when I attend the University. And I am so glad to entertain the high-ranking officials of the country on the stage. The University turned out the famous and outstanding students like General Aung San, U Nu, U Thant and many others during its remarkable days. It’s surely going to produce many more outstanding generations too.”
In order to shape and implement a program of ambitious and sustainable transformation, the University initiated a process of developing a Master Plan for its Revitalization in 2017. The Master Plan lays out a development vision for the period until 2030.
Joint Secretary, National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Committee, Min Aung said “We see the renovating and upgrading works for University of Yangon chaired by the State Counselor. We truly appreciate it. This grand centenary celebration will reflect the historic image of University. I would like to invite all the persons to come to visit the year-long celebration of University of Yangon.”
The centennial celebrations of alumni gatherings, ceremonies paying respects to retired teachers, paper-reading sessions, anniversary dinners and musical performances will take place for yearlong till the 31st of December, 2020.
