A display of fireworks marked the end of the Tokyo Olympics closing ceremony on Sunday night. The ceremony took place in a stadium without spectators, bringing a delayed and heavily restricted Games to a close.

The theme of the ceremony was “Worlds We Share,” capturing the effect of the pandemic and the virtual worlds and separation anxiety to which it has given birth. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said the Games were a success despite the pandemic. The next Summer Games will be held in Paris in 2024. But the Olympics will be back before then, with Winter Games convening in just six months in Beijing.
