Efforts For PWDs: Workshop On Job Opportunities And Justice For Persons With Disabilities

A workshop on Job Opportunities and Justice for persons with disabilities was held in Yangon on Thursday.

The workshop aims to promote employment opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Myanmar and is also to ensure that PWDs participate on an equal basis in the workplace through the recruitment process. Through these measures, persons with disabilities will be more included in the society. More inclusive education system is needed to ensure PWDs get jobs.

General Secretary, Myanmar Federation of Persons with Disabilities, Myat Thu Win said “This is Justice and Job Opportunities for persons with disabilities. I would like to highlight that how PWDs in Myanmar get the equal rights and justice given by the Constitution and in line with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Law in the country and also under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities like other countries. Also, this is to create job opportunities for PWDs with equal basic in the work place.”   

This workshop focused on three main factors such as how many jobs have been created for PWDs, their conditions in the jobs and ways to tackle the challenges they are facing. Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR Japan) in Yangon has been running a Vocational Training Center for Persons with Disabilities since 2000 in cooperation with Department of Social Welfare under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement. The Job Coaching for PWDs and other Job Opportunities were also clarified at the workshop.

Employment Support Officer, Association for Aid and Relief, Japan ( Yangon Office ), Swe Swe Hlaing said “AAR Japan has been running a Vocational Training Center (VTC) for Persons with Disabilities in Myanmar. The Center offers haircut/beauty, tailoring and computer courses. So far, more than 1,600 persons with disabilities across Myanmar who completed the training have got jobs. Provision of vocational training is also very important - persons with disabilities will be able to live independently and have a regular income, and also there will be a help for the country’s development.”

This is the 4th workshop on Job Opportunities and Justice for persons with disabilities organized by Myanmar Federation of persons with disabilities.
