As the government imposed a strict countrywide lockdown on Saturday due to the third strain of COVID-19 in the country, thousands in Pakistan's capital Karachi rushed to shopping malls and bazaars before they closed.

The Pakistani government is bringing in a countrywide lockdown from May 9 to May 16, with all shopping malls, recreational sites and public offices closed as the third wave of coronavirus infections hits the country.

But as infections continue to rise, many in Karachi were seen without masks, and not observing social distancing as they rushed to buy new clothes and jewelry to prepare for Eid festivities.

Pakistan has so far recorded 854,240 coronavirus infections, and 18,797 deaths.
