Eight cheetahs captured in Namibia have been flown to India as part of both countries' efforts to reintroduce the cheetah back into India, where they were declared distinct in 1952.

The eight animals will be part of 20 to be flown from southern African countries to India as conservationists and governments collaborate to restore the cheetah, a mammal with historical presence in India, to its familiar habitat.

South African counterparts are expected to send at least 12 cheetahs to India next month as the Indian government forges partnerships to bring the animals back to the country.
