The European Union has launched an investigation in Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram. EU officials said the IT giant may not be doing enough to protect users from disinformation.

The EU's executive arm announced on Tuesday that Meta may have breached the Digital Services Act, which requires businesses to take measures against illegal content.

Violators can be fined up to 6 percent of their annual revenue. The commission suspects Meta of not putting in place sufficient safeguards against deceptive advertisements and disinformation campaigns.
