Thousands of fans gathered in Frankfurt to welcome the German women's national football team home on Monday, one day after they lost the Euro 2022 final to England.
As the final whistle blew at London's Wembley Stadium, England's Lionesses were crowned champions after winning the match 2-1 in extra time. The tournament-record crowd of more than 87,000 for Sunday's final underlined the growth of women's soccer in Europe since the last time England and Germany played for a continental title 13 years ago. On that occasion, Germany surged to a 6-2 win over an England team which still relied on part-time players.
