Firefighters dug through mud and debris on the Italian island of Ischia for a fourth day on Tuesday. Eight people have been found dead, among them a three-week old infant and his parents.

The massive landslide before dawn on Saturday was triggered by exceptional rainfall, and sent a mass of mud and debris hurtling throughthe populated port town of Casamicciola. Some 30 houses were inundated by the mud and water, and more than 200 residents in the town of 8,300 remain homeless.

Environmental experts and geologists have pointed to a pattern of construction that interferes with natural water runoffs, as well as a prevalence of illegal buildings on the island that is susceptible to both landslides and earthquakes.
