A seminar on “How to measure to secure for Food Safety” was held in Yangon on Monday.

The seminar was jointly organized by Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Myanmar Food Processors and Exporters Association (MFPEA) and Japan Quality Assurance Organization (JQA) aiming to access standard quality assurance for Myanmar food industry.

Deputy Managing Director, JETRO, Khun Thu Rein said “We hope Food industry is the most potential for Myanmar’s processing industry. So, this seminar aims to receive international trust about food safety on Myanmar food industry. We also invited the expert from JQA to share about food safety standard including ISO, HACCP and many others. By doing this, it will create many opportunities for entrepreneurs when penetrating the international market.”

JQA is specializing in registration services for ISO management systems as well as safety testing and certification for compliance to variety of standards, both national and international. In order to develop Myanmar food industry, the processing systems with assurance are needed, said vice chairman of MFPEA.

Vice Chairman, MFPEA, Sein Thaung Oo said “We need to know production systems with assurance and ISO systems for the development of food industry. In quality marking on foods, there are certification bodies and agencies in Myanmar. But we need people awareness on food safety. Also, government is also needed to cooperate for assurance procedures.”

Among the registered enterprises in Myanmar, 60% are food enterprises and 90% of them are using local products and distributing in local market. And also process foods are still less than the basic foods. So, the seminar will also create many opportunities for those challenges, it’s learnt.
