India to replace China as world’s most populous in 2023

The United Nations estimates that the world's population will reach 8 billion, and that India will replace China as the world's most populous nation next year. The UN report on World Population Prospects 2022 that the global population growth fell below 1% in 2020 for the first time since 1950.

The report projects that next year India, with a current population of 1.412 billion, will surpass China, with a current population of 1.426 billion. By 2036, 600 million people will be living in urban cities in India, representing 40 percent of the population.

More than half of the projected increase in global population up to 2050 will be concentrated in just eight countries of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania.
