The Italian coastguard rescued a sailing boat carrying around 40 migrants in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday. The migrants were in Italy's search and rescue zone of international waters. The migrants were spotted by two vessels in the area, including the Norwegian-flagged Geo Barents, a rescue ship operated by Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders).

The Italian coast guard notified the vessels that it would carry out the rescue mission, but asked the Médecins Sans Frontières rescue ship to remain in the area in case it needed help, Médecins Sans Frontières reported. The migrants were taken to the southern port city of Crotone.
