Thousands of Japanese companies began a massive drive on Monday to give the coronavirus vaccine to employees and families, in a nationwide campaign reaching more than 13 million people, revving up one of the slowest vaccine rollouts in the developed world.

Japanese railway company, JR East, also began workplace vaccination in Tokyo on Monday. Universities are also eligible. Taro Kono, a minister in charge of vaccinations, got his first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine on Monday as part of workplace inoculations for government employees held at the education ministry building. Kono told reporters that workplace inoculations would be important for economic revitalization. About 10,000 public servants were expected to get their shots at the site starting Monday. Only about 6% of Japanese are fully vaccinated.
