Japan said Monday it was aware of the North Korean announcement that it successfully launched a new type of long-range cruise missile over the weekend.
The Korean Central News Agency said the cruise missiles, demonstrated an ability to hit targets 1,500 kilometers away during flight tests on Saturday and Sunday.
Japan's chief cabinet secretary Katsunobu Kato declined to give details of what it had learned about the launch, but noted that if it's true, "it is threatening to the peace and safety of Japan and its surrounding region."
