Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono told at a news conference on Friday morning that Japan's security will not be directly affected by the expiration of GSOMIA (General Security of Military Information Agreement), a military intelligence-sharing pact between South Korea and Japan. South Korea is set to let fall an intelligence-sharing pact with Japan on Saturday amid a bitter dispute over history and trade, defying mounting U.S. pressure to maintain a key element of their trilateral security cooperation. But Kono mentioned that if South Korean side ends GSOMIA, it might send a wrong message to North Korea and other neighboring countries. GSOMIA was sealed in 2016 after a years-long U.S. push for a better joint response to North Korea's growing military threat.
