Myanmar has more than 200 varieties of mangoes, and among them, Sein Ta Lone, Shwe Hintha, Yin Kwe, Mya Kyauk and Ma Chit Su are the most commercial type in local and export markets respectively.

Myanmar mostly exports mangoes, especially Sein Ta Lone, to China, and also to India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Korea, Singapore, and Japan.

Sein Ta Lone mango is mostly grown in Mandalay Region, and there are more than 200,000 acres of mango cultivation in the region.

Mango Farm Owner, Myo Khin Tha Village, Pakokku Township, Mandalay Region, Than Htike said “I have grown different types of mangoes in this 11 acres farm. There about 1000 trees of Sein Ta Lone and Shwe Hintha which have been grown since the year 2000. There are also some mango species from Thailand. Previously, I only distribute in the local markets. But there has less demand for Sein Ta Lone mango. So, we export it to China.”

A basket of Sein Ta Lone which cover 17 pieces of mango is sold at about 30 to 40 Yuan in the export market. In the local market, the price varies from 100 to 500 kyats for a mango depending on the sizes and species.

Mango Farm Owner, Myo Khin Tha Village, Pakokku Township, Mandalay Region, Than Htike said “At present, the market price for export is declined. In the local market, we use to sell Sein Ta Lone at the price ranges from 500 kyats to 150 kyats respectively. We also export Shwe Hintha mango to China, and it also fetch good price.”

According to the Ministry of Commerce, Myanmar exported 50,000 tons of Sein Ta Lone mangoes in 2017-2018 fiscal year. It is learnt that the country aims to raise the export volume of Sein Ta Lone to 100,000 tons in 2020.
