At least 27 people were killed and several others injured when a fire engulfed a four-storey commercial building in the Indian capital on Friday evening. Dozens of people were rescued from the building, which contains mainly shops, according to the fire service.

Twenty-seven fire engines were deployed and the flames were brought under control after more than five hours. A search for anyone trapped in the rubble continued, the fire service said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. There was no immediate confirmation by the police. Fires are common in India, where building laws and safety norms are often flouted by builders and residents.
