Mine Awareness: Mine Action Authority Workshop Organized In Nay Pyi Taw

Myanmar National Mine Action Authority Workshop took place in Nay Pyi Taw, Wednesday.

The workshop was jointly organized by the Embassy of New Zealand, the Danish Mining growth fund and the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement to bring together inter-ministerial committee and to develop how to set up the mine action in Myanmar.

Director, Department of Rehabilitation, Nyan Myo Aung said “This workshop focuses on laying down policy, sharing experience and cooperation of the concerned Ministries to establish national mine action authority in Myanmar. It’s the first step to intend to raise awareness on the mine risk to people, to lessen losses and eliminate threats of landmines. Up to now, the Ministry has provided each 200,000 kyats to 535 mine victims, totaling over 100 million kyats.”

The Ministry is carrying out Mine Risk Education (MRE) awareness program, fatten assistance and advocacy program.

Head of Humanitarian Affairs, Embassy of Switzerland in Myanmar, Thierry Umbehr said “Today is the special day to bring also together experiences from Myanmar different Ministries including at the army in order to think and exchange how the best expertise can be trans- latest to a concrete step for the future… Experience on the field, we are also invited Geneva International Center for humanitarian demining in order to bring back together this experience how other countries have elaborated their national mine action authority.”

The Ministry set up a Mine Risk Education Working Group in 2012 in cooperation with government institutions, UN agencies, local and international organizations in order to implement effectively the mine action pillars.
