Myanmar's delegation, led by Member of the State Administration Council, Union Minister for Home Affairs and Chairman of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, returned to Yangon on August 12th after attending the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matter (ADMM) in Vientiane, Laos, from August 10th to 11th.
The 8th ADMM commenced with an inauguration speech by Laotian Deputy Prime Minister and Public Security Minister Pol-Gen Vilay Lakhamfong. The meeting proceeded with addresses from the heads of ASEAN delegations, including a speech by Union Minister Lt-Gen Yar Pyae.
He emphasized Myanmar's active participation in the drug eradication process, aligning with ASEAN commitments by implementing preventive and educational, treatment and rehabilitation, control and substitution efforts outlined in the ASEAN Work Plan on Securing Communities against Illicit Drugs 2016-2025.
The meeting also discussed on the ASEAN Joint Declaration set for release at the 67th UN Commission on Narcotic Drug, the prevailing illicit drug situation in the region, plans based on the outcomes of the 44th Meeting of ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matter, the progress of the ASEAN Work Plan on Securing Communities against Illicit Drugs 2016-2025, and future collaborative initiatives.
On the sidelines of the event, the Myanmar delegation engaged in a bilateral meeting with the Laotian Deputy Prime Minister and Public Security Minister, where they discussed on enhancing cooperation between the two nations and ministries.
Topics covered included the resumption of ministerial-level bilateral meetings, which had been disrupted by COVID-19, border area control, combatting drug trafficking, human smuggling, illegal arms dealing, and online crimes, as well as the reopening of bilateral Liaison Offices and the Friendship Bridge to advance mutual interests. In the evening, the Laotian Deputy Prime Minister hosted a gala dinner in honor of the visiting delegations.
