National Strategy: Resettlement Programmes And Closure Of IDP Camps

Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Win Myat Aye explained the National Strategy for resettlement programmes and closure of IDP camps on Monday afternoon in Sittwe of Rakhine State.

The Union Minister stressed that armed conflicts have left many internally displaced persons at the IDP camps in Kachin, Shan, Kayin and Rakhine states. The National Strategy must be implemented in cooperation with civil societies, INGOs, UN agencies and social organizations.

The strategy was adopted in 2018, and the monthly cash assistance is being given to the internally displaced persons, with the total amount of over K 1.8 billion up to date. The Union Minister called for cooperation on drawing working plans to meet the specific needs in respective states and regions. Director General of Department of Disaster Management explained the strategy in detail.

The Union Minister, Rakhine State Chief Minister and officials answered the questions raised by the attendees about closures of IDP camps in Myebon and Kyaukphyu townships, participation of civil communities, education, health, livelihood and security for IDPs, freedom of movement, participation of community-based organizations in drafting state-level working plans and allocation of budgets for resettlement programmes.
