After 52 years on the throne, Denmark's Queen Margrethe II will abdicate on Sunday, handing over power to her eldest son Crown Prince Frederik, who will take the name Frederik X, with more than 100,000 Danes expected to turn out for the unprecedented event.
Aske Julius, singer from Copenhagen said "More than half of the Danish population has never known anything else but the Queen. She’s really the embodiment of Denmark, many people really think she’s the soul of the nation, she’s the mother of the nation, she’s a very, very special person. She’s very, very popular, a lot of people just want to come and be here, show their respects."
MickaelMose, Dane from Jutland said "We have travelled 3.5 hours by train to come here. It’s a historic moment tomorrow because she’s not dying, she’s not dead! It’s the first time in, I think it's something like 500 years, that's happened (ed: abdication). So it is a historic moment tomorrow."
Four out of five Danes believe that the new monarch, famous for his passion for sports and championing the environment, will be a good king.
