Public Awareness: Media Workshop For Capital Market In Myanmar Held

The Media Workshop for Myanmar Capital Market was held at the Yangon Stock Exchange (YSX) Seminar Room in Yangon on Thursday.

The workshop was jointly organized by Securities and Exchange Commission of Myanmar (SECM), Yangon Stock Exchange (YSX) and Myanmar Journalism Institute (MJI) aiming to promote public awareness through media for update information.

At the workshop, the definitions and procedures of Capital Market in Myanmar were presented by the officials of Securities and Exchange Commission of Myanmar.

Executive Senior Manager, YSX (Administration Department), Thet Tun Oo said “After three and half years of YSX establishment, this is the first time organizing media workshop to promote public awareness and familiarity with the terms of Stock Exchange through media correctly. For example, we have securities houses and YSX and listed companies. So, we need to educate for these terms. Also, we’ve been making investor promotion seminars, listing promotion seminar until to the rural areas.”

Securities and Exchange Commission of Myanmar (SECM) is an organization under YSX who shall supervise the securities industries in accordance with law, rules and regulations for development of capital market as a whole. And the securities house or company is to act as intermediary between issuing companies and investors.

Also, Capital Market is a market for the raising of long-term finance such as the purchase of shares and equities. To develop capital market in Myanmar, the stakeholder need to put more efforts at the present and the years to come.

Member, SECM, Htay Chun said “Capital market is combined with equity market and bond market.  To develop bond market, people need to know how to buy bonds. So, we have plans to organize awareness program for it. Currently, bonds can be bought at securities houses. We are also trying to get secondary bond market and corporate bond market.”

To establishment of Capital market, there were also enacted Securities Exchange Law on 31st of July 2013, issued Securities Exchange Rules on 27th of July 2015 and established Securities and Exchange Commission of Myanmar (SECM) which plays the role of Regulator on 19th August 2014.

In issuing securities, a public company shall submit the procedure to the Commission before public offering to its securities and publish the prospectus containing the material particulars of the company when offering to the public. The private company can be listed on YSX by changing into public company systematically according to the officials.

Upon implementing the development of Capital Market in Myanmar, there are many implementation processes in coming 2020.

Executive Senior Manager, YSX (Administration Department), Thet Tun Oo said “We expect much progress for Stock Market in coming 2020. There will be increase listed companies and foreigner participation and investment. We are going to conduct the educational awareness programs and I hope many improvements will be made for the Capital Market.”

Currently, there are listed five-public companies on Stock Exchange and issued license to six-securities companies in accordance with Securities Exchange law.
