Talent Show: Commemoration Ceremony Of Int’l Day Of Persons With Disabilities

The Commemoration Ceremony of International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2019 took place at International Business Center in Yangon on Tuesday. 

With the support of Department of Rehabilitation, the Integrated Community Development Foundation and the Disable People Organization, Yangon Regional Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disability organized the celebration.

The event is aimed to support well-being of persons with disabilities and to raise awareness on their rights in the society.

Member, Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disability, Thein Han Thu said “It’s the 1st time celebration in collaboration with 40 disabled organizations across the country. Myanmar ratified United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). In accord with the Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2015), the government is undertaking measures on the rights of disabled persons.” 

According to the report of Myanmar Census, people with disabilities are accounted for 2.3 million (4.6 percent of the country’s population). To promote their rights, the schools and vocational training centers for people with disabilities have been founded. 

Around 300 disabled people participated in the celebration, highlighting talent shows of Myanmar Persons with Disabilities. At the event, the local artists also entertained with their performances.

Thazin Thiri Khit said “I’m studying the Music Major at National University of Arts and Culture. Today, I sing an own song including international songs with my band which is organized with my friends from the University. I am very pleased and honor for participating in the ceremony.”

Khin Htoo May said “I perform cultural songs with Myanmar Traditional Orchestra. I’m so happy and I’d like to say words of thank to officials who organized the event.”

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is annually celebrated on 3rd December around the world to honor the disabled persons. Myanmar has also celebrated the event since 1994.
