The opening ceremony of Maker Fest Myanmar 2020 was held at American Center, Yangon on Friday.

It was jointly organized by American Centre Yangon and U.S. Embassy Yangon to promote the creativity and innovation of many makers such as technological enthusiasts, crafters, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, artists and students.

Library Director, American Center Yangon, Kyaw Khaing said “Maker Fest 2020 is a festival to create a network in one place for the young entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts in Myanmar and we want to support the makers. We’ve started maker fairs since 2016 but maker festival has started in 2019. For this year, we’ve conducted maker tour 2019 in three cities of Dawei, Monywa and Hopone to bring maker spirit to local community by conducting workshops. We invited back makers from those cities.”

Maker tour 2019 visited 8 locations in three cities, conducted 37 workshops which were attended by more than 800 people and hosted mini Makerfests for more than 1000 people.

The Maker Fest 2020 is going to run from 24th to 25th of January including innovative exhibitions, hands-on workshops, demonstration, tech talks, robotics competition and many more.

Co-Organizer, Aung Naing Oo said “Hopefully, they get inspiration; we also hope that they get technical support. So, since we have various workshops running, we have coding workshops, programming workshops, electronic workshops, all of them are free to attend. Some of the workshops will be very useful such as design thinking, intellectual property law which means that they can protect their intellectual property, they can protect their invention legally by the time they launch market commercially.”

About 30 projects by makers are being showcased at the exhibition including the most recent and forward-looking technological projects, traditional arts, and crafts. At the same time, Maker Fest Mandalay 2020 is going to conduct in coming 8th of February, it’s learnt.
