Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn attended a ceremony in Bangkok, on Sunday, to honor his late father, at the end of a year that has seen the image and role of the country's monarchy come under intense scrutiny.

The monarch presided over the laying of the foundation stone for a statue of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, which will be the centerpiece of a new park due for construction on the site of a horseracing venue.

King Bhumibol reigned for 70 years. His birthday was December 5, and the country marks Fathers' Day on that date. He died in 2016.
