Over a dozen people have been injured as a severe tropical storm brings powerful winds and heavy rain to western Japan.

Khanun has drenched areas of Kyushu and Shikoku with record rainfall, raising the risk of disaster. Bands of rain clouds have been developing in the path of the storm.

Officials are warning people to stay on alert for swollen rivers, flooding and mudslides. At least 14 people were injured in Kyushu due to strong winds. The storm cut power to more than 10,000 households in the region.

A mudslide occurred on the side of a road and disrupted traffic. Transportation has been disrupted in parts of western Japan, including local train services and domestic flights.

Another storm is expected to reach Japan's Ogasawara Islands in the Pacific through Saturday.

The path of severe tropical storm Lan remains unclear, but weather officials say it may approach Japan's main island of Honshu next week.
