A World Health Organization expert said on Tuesday the coronavirus is "extremely unlikely" to have leaked from a Chinese lab and most probably jumped to humans via an intermediary species.
Head & food safety specialist, WHO missions Team, Peter Ben Embarek said "The findings suggest that the laboratory incident hypothesis is extremely unlikely and to explain to introduction of the virus in the human population and therefore is not in a hypothesis that implies to suggest future studies for our work into the understanding of the origins of the virus."
The WHO team including experts from 10 countries visited Wuhan from Singapore on January 14 and spent the first two weeks working by video conference from a hotel while in quarantine. Experts are considering several theories for how the disease first ended up in humans, leading to a pandemic that has now killed more than 2.3 million people worldwide.
