Worshippers in Tokyo plunge into ice bath to mark New Year

Worshippers at a Tokyo shrine welcomed the New Year with an ice-cold bath in an annual tradition that dates back about 70 years.
Participants warmed up through stretches and chanted before plunging into a pool filled with huge ice blocks. They took part in this water purification ceremony with the intention of refreshing and spiritual cleansing to purify their soul and bring good health in the New Year.
