With a record-breaking heat wave intensifying over much of the U.S. Midwest and East Coast on Sunday, residents were doing whatever they could to keep cool. Temperatures reached as high as 98 degrees Fahrenheit by midday in Washington, DC and New York City, according to the National Weather Service. In New York, the streets were unusually empty, and anyone outside was doing their best to keep cool with children running through park fountains and open fire hydrants.

In Washington, dozens of people beat the heat by indulging at a National Ice Cream Day event while others took to local water parks and swimming pools. The heat wave is due to break on Monday in a burst of thunderstorms and cooling rain brought on by a cold front, the National Weather Service said.
