Peru residents struggle to cross river flooded by El Nino rains

Coastal El Niño specifically focuses on the devastating effects that occur along the Peruvian coast while El Niño events are often associated with heavy rains and landslides in the Andean region.

Researchers warned that Peru may be bracing for a particularly strong Coastal El Niño phenomenon this summer. In a northern province of Peru, people struggle to cross a flooding river by renting small boats or pushing vehicles on foot. Heavy rains caused by El Nino have caused the Charanal River to swell, and residents of surrounding villages, who have to commute to buy food and medicine, are asking the government for help.
