The death toll has risen to 206 and 52 remain missing from Japan's New Year's Day earthquake in Ishikawa prefecture. Ongoing relief efforts are being hampered by damaged roads and the harsh winter weather. More than 3,000 people in the northern part of the peninsula remained cut off.

Over 26,000 are staying at temporary shelters, and some facilities are running out of volunteers. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida plans to visit the disaster-hit areas as early as Saturday. He is expected to survey the situation and determine what needs to be done to support those impacted.
