Transboundary Haze Pollution: Project for Monitoring and Assessment of Air Quality

Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, U Khin Maung Yi delivered an opening speech at the Closing Ceremony of "Project for Monitoring and Assessment of Air Quality in Transboundary Haze Pollution" on Thursday morning at Grand Amara Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw.

The project was facilitated by the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund (2021), from September 2021 to March 2024.The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Zhang Zhonghua, Director of the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar, the Deputy Minister, Deputy Chairman of Mekong-Lancang Cooperation National Unit (Myanmar) and Senior officials from the ministry. 

Director of ECD (Shan State), Min Thein, said " With the allocated Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund, Mobile Vehicle and air quality monitoring and measuring equipment were purchased through tender system for the air quality measurement activities to be carried out in Tachileik District. Since July 2023, monthly air quality monitoring and measurement activities have been conducting within the district. As the “Project for Monitoring and Assessment of Air Quality in Transboundary Haze Pollution" will be completed in March, the air quality monitoring and measuring processes will be continued with State Government Fund. While conducting air quality monitoring process, we also issued the air quality alert to the public to take precautions." 

Project for Monitoring and Assessment of Air Quality in Transboundary Haze Pollution" is one of the 22 projects proposed by Myanmar to be carried out with the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund (2021).

It's a beneficial project for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, especially the Environmental Conservation Department not only to prevent and solve the transboundary haze pollution problem but also to effectively carry out the monitoring of air quality using the Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Unit.

Director of ECD, Dr. Tin Aung Win, said " During project period, air quality monitoring and measuring activities were carried out effectively in Tachilek District, which is the border of three countries (Myanmar, Laos and Thailand).  We were also able to effectively carry out the awareness raising programs about the transboundary haze pollution and comprehensive trainings on air quality monitoring and measurement were also conducted to enhance the capacities of the representatives from the Environmental Conservation Department within the project period. "

Throughout the project period, the trainings encompassing air quality measurement, handling of Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Unit, transboundary haze pollution control, and comprehensive training on the handling of air quality monitoring and measurement equipment were conducted. Furthermore, the capacities of the representatives from the Environmental Conservation Department were enhanced for ambient air quality monitoring.
