Former Tunisian Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa applied on Sunday for his candidacy in the upcoming presidential election, hoping to succeed the country's late president Essebsi who died last month. Jomaa will run as the candidate for his Tunisian Alternative Party in the September 15 election, which was brought forward from November after Essebsi's passing. Speaking ahead of a candidacy event in Tunis, Jomaa said Tunisians were waiting for the moment to elect a new leader. Jomaa led a technocratic government in 2014, a year that ended with free elections.
