A ceremony was held at the Veterinary Science University in Nay Pyi Taw Yazin on Friday to launch the Project on Genetic Improvement of Native Chicken Species and Boosting Production Through Disease Exposure.

The ceremony coincided with a Workshop on Upgrading Native Chicken Species using High-Quality Breeds and Screening for Diseases. The project, funded by the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund (2023), aims to address the need for enhanced cooperation among researchers, experts, and breeders, as emphasized by Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation U Min Naung in his speech.

According to the 2023 Animal Survey, there are over 41 million chickens in Myanmar, with a growing market demand for improved breeding. The Veterinary Science University will spearhead efforts to genetically improve native chicken species and increase production by exposing them to infectious diseases.

The project aims to develop native chicken breeds with faster growth rates and superior taste, while implementing preventive measures against common chicken diseases.

Additionally, research will focus on conserving native chicken species. This initiative not only benefits undergraduate students through practical learning opportunities but also provides thesis avenues for postgraduate students.
