The last surviving member of an uncontacted Amazonian tribe has been found dead in a remote area of the rainforest, Funai, Brazil's federal agency for Indigenous Affairs, announced over the weekend. The man had lived alone for years as his fellow tribesmen passed away.

He was dubbed "the man in the hole," for his habit of burrowing into the ground for shelter, living on foraged plants and fruits, and small catches of game and fish. Officials say they came across the Indigenous man during a survey in the rainforest of Indigenous tribes, finding him deceased while lying in a hammock. Uncontacted tribes are groups that live without sustained contact with the outside world.
