No plan to close during Thingyan: Shwedagon pagoda to open daily during Thingyan

Among the days of significance in Myanmar, Myanmar traditional Thingyan festival is a special occasion to usher the traditional New Year.

According to a member of Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees, Buddhists throughout the country performed meritorious deeds on this significant day and also, plans are underway to open Shwe Dagon Pagoda from 5:00am to 8:00pm on a daily basis during Thingyan period, aiming for the public to visit freely and peacefully and to perform meritorious deeds in this significant occasion.

Member of Pagoda Board of Trustees, Shwedagon Pagoda, Thein Htun Maung, said " Some members of Pagoda board of trustees will temporarily enter into monasticism as temporary monks and preparations are also being undertaken for the ordination ceremony in 8th and 9th April. As Thingyan period is a public holiday, there is no special plan to carry out."

At Shwe Dagon Pagoda, it’s needed to submit to the Pagoda Board of Trustees in advance for permission in performing of meritorious deeds such as donation and Parittas recitation and it’s still not allowed to accommodate at night on pagoda.

As Shwe Dagon Pagoda is open daily, pilgrims and devotees can pay visit to perform meritorious deeds during the Maha Thingyan festival period, aiming to wash away dirt and grime of the old year.
