Pagoda Renovation Project: Chinese Technicians To Renovate Bagan Thatbyinnyu Pagoda

The renovation project of Bagan Thabbinnyu pagoda is going to begin with the technical support of the China, according to press release of the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar.

The Chinese technical task force comprised of 4 technicians sent from Shanxi Province of PRC arrived at Yangon on 8th December. After they have stayed quarantine period, they went to Bagan and carried out initial preparations for the innovation work.

The Chinese technical taskforce met with the director-general of Archeological Research and National Museums Department together with the responsible officials of Bagan division and discussed the tasks to be carried out in Myanmar this time, working place to be provided by Myanmar side, storage area for construction materials and accommodation for the taskforce.

The project taskforce inspected the emergency maintenance works completed in 2019. The ceremony of commencing renovation project will officially be held on 8th January, 2022. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked in central region of Myanmar in August in 2016 hit hundreds of pagodas in Bagan including Thatbinnyu pagoda.  

According to invitation of Myanmar government to sustain and preserve the historic cultural heritages of the country, the Chinese technicians from the organizations including cultural heritage conservation research center of Shanxi Province visited Bagan several times and initial plans were set for the renovation of the pagodas and temples.

The MoU between Myanmar and China on the renovation tasks of Thatbinnue pagoda is signed on 22 September, 2018 and the technician group from Shanxi Province came to Myanmar during April, 2019 and the renovation works of Thatbinnue pagoda were carried out, according to the press release.
