Preparations for Election: UEC Chairman met with regional political parties’ leaders

The meeting of the Union Election Commission and the region/district/Township level responsible persons of the registered political parties in Magway Region was held at the Office of Magway Region General Administration Department on 9th November and attended by the Chairman of UEC U Thein Soe, Magway Region Chief Minister U Tint Lwin, region ministers and departmental officials and a total of 160 region/district/Township level responsible persons from the Union Solidarity and Development Party, National Unity Party, People’s Pioneer Party, Myanmar Peasants Development party, Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (White Tiger Party) and Democratic Party of National Politics. In his opening remark, the UEC Chairman U Thein Soe said that the previous 50 political parties and 14 new parties applied registration with 60 days complying with that law.

Out of 64 political parties, 39 parties have been granted party registration in line with the law. The requirement to gather at least 100,000 members within 90 days if a party plans to organize nationwide as well as at least 1,000 members for parties if they aim to operate within a region or state, the establishment of the minimum number of offices as mentioned in the law within 180 days, and the disallowance of continuing as a political party unless it meets requirements.

He added that the development of the Myanmar Electronic Voting Machine (MEVM) with the help of experts from Myanmar, and the current involvement of ministries’ employees and residents of the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory in practical tests to vote. Then, the region/district/Township level responsible persons of the political parties reported the cooperation for the accuracy of the party members in line with the law and the challenges encountered.
