Social protection measures: Nat’l Comm. on Social Protection held its meeting (1/2023)

The National Committee on Social Protection held its meeting (1/2023) at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement on Tuesday in the presence of Vice Chairman-1 of National Committee on Social Protection and Union Minister Dr. Soe Win, Vice Chairman-2 and Union Minister for Labor U Myint Naung and its committee members.

In his opening speech, the Vice Chairman-1 of the National Committee for Social Protection said that Myanmar National Social Protection Strategic Plan was endorsed in 2014 and a national committee comprising of its relevant departments has been formed in order to effectively implement it nationwide. He reiterated that social protection can reduce the socio-economic vulnerabilities of citizens and support human resources development as well as providing social protection that plays a  key role to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan (MSDP).

He added that the Ministry is providing financial support program for expectant mothers and their children under 2 years, a social pension program for senior citizens aged 85 and above and comprehensive social protection and called for collaborative efforts of relevant departments and Regions/States Governments to effectively carry out social protection activities. He highlighted the importance of national-level coordination in implementation of social protection activities such as full nutrition, education, reducing under-5 mortality and creating employment opportunities in accordance with the policies and strategic plans.

Next, Vice Chairman-2 and Union Minister U Myint Naung clarified the social protection activities, works undertaking by the Social Security Board and ways to improve employment opportunities.

Then, the relevant officials made sector wise discussion such as social protection activities, indicators and ongoing processes and then approved six draft resolutions. 

Vice Chairman-1 of the National Committee for Social Protection coordinated the needs upon the reports and the meeting was concluded after the closing remark.
