The No 686 Down train loaded gravels, which ran for the Thaephyugon-Kali section on the Bago-Mawalmyaing railway, derailed between mileposts 123/1-122/2 of Theinseik and Donwun stations after hitting a mine blast at 7:10 am on 18th March.

The mine was planted by insurgent groups. Due to the mine blast, the No 81 Up train from Yangon arrived at Bago railway station at 9:10 am on that day and Kyaikto railway station at 12:06 pm. A total of 449 passengers from that train were transported to Thaton station in seven vehicles.

The No 82 Down train that departed for Mawalmyaing at 9:10 am arrived at Thaton station at 11:38 am and took the No 81 Up train passengers to Mawlamyine. Meanwhile, 441 passengers of the No 82 Down train were transported to Kyaikto station by these vehicles at 2:30 pm and again by the No 81 Up train to Yangon.

The staff of Myanma Railways (MR) participated in transporting the passengers safely. Regional officials and security forces members proceeded to the site in a timely manner for inspection, and the MR staff pulled up the derailed locomotives and carriages to reopen the railway section as quickly as possible.

Since 1 February 2021, the terrorist groups have been perpetrating 130 mining incidents and explosions within railway areas and stations, 52 blasts on railway bridges, and 12 instances of torching stations and employee housings. Their actions aim to destabilize the rule of law and endanger the safety of travelers, drawing widespread condemnation from the public.
