The Myanmar Child Labor Eradication Awareness and Capacity Building Work Committee held its meeting on Tuesday at the Ministry of Information in Nay Pyi Taw. In the meeting, Chairman of the Work Committee Deputy Minister for Information U Ye Tint stressed the term “child labour” which is often defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development.

It refers to work that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children; and/or interferes with their schooling by: depriving them of the opportunity to attend school; obliging them to leave school prematurely; or requiring them to attempt to combine school attendance with excessively long and heavy work.

As the youth are the future of the country, parents and teachers are responsible for nurturing children to become those who will be able to develop the country. The Deputy Minister also called for projects for the 2nd National Action Plan for the Eradication of Child Labour in the country (2024-2028) which will be submitted to the National Committee this month.

And, Secretary of the Work Committee made clarification on factors to be based on the drafting of the 2nd National Action Plan. Attendees also made discussions on awareness activities, vocational training and plans. It’s reported that the 1st National Action Plan for the Eradication of Child Labour in the country was implemented through a 5-year action plan between 2019 and 2023.
