The Leading Committee on Renovation of Cultural Heritage in Bagan’s World Heritage Site held its meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday.

Chairman of the Leading Committee, Member of the State Administration Council, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Defence Admiral Tin Aung San attended the meeting and made a speech, saying that following the 2016 earthquake, 389 structures were damaged, with the Thabyinyu Pagoda undergoing renovation in collaboration with China, while the remaining 388 have completed the first phase of restoration.

For the durability of Thabyinyu Pagoda, there were no significant concerns about its collapse after the completion of the initial emergency renovation phase. Beyond earthquake-affected structures, renovation measures have been implemented for 110 pagodas identified during ground surveys, 41 buildings susceptible to damage, 60 structures affected by heavy rain, and 59 others impacted by Cyclone Mocha.

Additionally, 15 structures contributing to inundation issues have undergone renovation following thorough surveys. Admiral Tin Aung San highlighted the 9-year collaborative project with China for the Thabyinyu Pagoda's restoration, facilitated through a signed memorandum of understanding (MOU).

Furthermore, an MOU with India has been established for the renovation of 92 ancient structures, spanning a 10-year project period.

The Committee Vice Chairman, Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture U Tin Oo Lwin, and attendees reported updates on the renovation works, and future plans. In response to the reports, the Committee Chairman coordinated the needs and gave concluding remarks.
