Closing Ceremony on the Project for Enhancement of Medical Education (PEME) was held in Yangon on Tuesday.

Ministry of Health and Sports (MoHS) and JICA started the 4 and a half year project in 2015. The project focuses on human resource development by enhancing research activities and clinical skills to support the Ministry’s efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage in 2030. It will also enable Myanmar to set up sustainable research and educational environment for medical professionals, especially for medical doctors and radiographers.

Chief Representative, JICA Myanmar Office, Masayuki KARASAWA said “We implement together with the MoHS for the enhancement of the medical doctors and also the research to strength the medical service system in Myanmar. Now 60 short-term trainees for the medical services, they educated in Japanese hospitals in Japan. And also the certain long-term doctor students came back here with the doctor degree in Japan for their further research activities here. We believe those members will strength the medical system in Myanmar”.

During the project, Myanmar doctors went to Japan for PhD degree study in the field of basic research in medicine, and short-term trainees studied at 6 Japanese Universities for clinical training.

Director General, Ministry of Health and Sports, Dr. Tin Tin Lay said “For the training, we sent the teachers from the universities under the Department of Human Resources for Health as well as doctors and medical assistants under the Ministry. We can see that they have improved their researching, teaching and curing skills.”

The project is designed to help the trainees bring so many experience and knowledge under the targets.

Project Manager, Dr. Kyaw Soe Nyunt said “There are three main targets in this project such as basic medical science, clinical skill and medical education in Myanmar. We’ve got so many benefits. We all together made disseminating seminars based on the trainees’ experiences.”

After the project, plans are underway to apply the trainees’ experience and knowledge in the coming National Clinical Skill Centre in Myanmar for the Medical Education System.
